My Evinrude 1978 6HP o/b runs well but, when starting from cold, needs about 5 minutes to warm up before I can apply the throttle effectively. Is this normal? Sometimes, I want to make a quick getaway!

Re: Starting a 1978 Evinrude 6HP

I have a 1984 6hp Yachtwin That takes a few moments to warm up but certainly not five minutes. Like yours it has a fixed main jet and an adjustable idle mixture. (Similar if not the same carb, likewise the ignition system)

It always makes sense to check/clean/reset or even replace the plugs. The current recommendation is for QL77JC4 gapped at 0.030" .

have you tried setting the idle mixture a little richer. My starting procedure is: throttle as wide as the starter inhibit mechanism allows + full choke. I then push the choke back and turn the idle mixture to maximum and return it slowly to normal as it warms up.

Maybe you should look at the idle mixture setting . See Joe Reeves' article on setting carb needles on the Engine FAQ board. If you cannot get it to run satisfactorily then you probably need to do a full carb clean. You'll probably find that is necessary.

Thanks for the helpful advice, Vic S. Yes, the throttle does work a bit faster with the settings you describe though it takes a little longer to fire up. I'll have to check out those spark plugs too. Can't remember when I last changed them!
