The 2 most common problems that keep a engine like yours from starting are after pumping the bulb hard, not advancing the cold start throttle and not holding the primer in intill the engine starts

Ditto the pump, fast idle, prime, start. I would add that you may need to push the key in momentarily a time or two until the engine warms a bit.

Re: starting a 75 merc o/b

hey again
Les here my mechanic told me I shouldn't have to cold advance the throttle in this warm weather. I should add most of his advice has done little for me. I pump the ball until hard hold the key in to choke and when I feel it kick over I stop choking, once I try this and it does not work I wait a min or two and try again, after that it is just trial and error.
thanks again, I am going to try your advice tomorrow morning.

The fast idle lever would not have been put on the control if it wasn't necessary. Use it as intended. It doesn't have to be full up -- half way is fine just to give the engine a little help when cold. Drop it down a bit after the engine starts. You cannot shift with the fast idle lever up so make sure you put it all the way down before engaging forward or reverse. If you flood the engine move the fast idle lever full up and stay off the choke.

My old 1978 50HP Merc was the same way. I agree on having to use the fast idle lever as it is most definitely necessary. Make sure that you also priime the heck out of it. Those motors love lots of gas before starting.

You mean to say that it gets warm in Ontario? 8) Even here in southern Louisiana in the middle of summer I had to use the fast idle lever along with the choke when starting for the first time.

Trying to start one of those boogers by hand for the first time in the morning is kind of exciting too. Had to do that a few times during the time I had that motor.

You NEED the fast idle lever..... just don;t over-rev it once it starts. Hold it under 2000.

i pump bulb till hard, idle lever all the way up, hold choke button, turn over 3 -4 times, repeat, starts second time every time. release choke lower idle, may have to hit choke a couple ot times to keep running till it settles down, the love gas when they are cold.
