Howdy,
I have a 1965 Johnson 75hp, that I'm going to mount on a boat. Motor was last run in a shop by a friend who told me that it was in good shape. My first question of this endevor is this. Is there a different hose fitting for water supply? It doesn't look like double suction cup version that I have will work. If so where does the water intake from? will a big garbage can work? I really don't want to mount the thing and find out it won't run. Help please....,mike

welcome to iboats!

muffs like this

work just fine.

They go over the intakes located here:

don't have to be water-tight, just make sure water gets to the intakes.

don't rev her up any more than you need to get 'er warmed up, then just idle - being out of the water means no backpressure on the exhaust.

i question if it works on the 1965. i'm not sure enough to venture that answer, as the change was in that time frame. use the big can and be sure.

Both gearcases for that motor are the old style similar to the 9.5 for water intake. Just find a bigger barrel.

Though different, both gearcases have the main water screens above the prop, and both have a secondary intake above the A/V plate.

Probably not a good idea to put that outboard in gear in a barrel, either. Unless, of course, you want to get very wet.:D

I keep assuming common sense, which I guess means that I have not learned all that I should.

For anyone interested, the two gearcases for the 75HP in 1965 are mirrored in the 65HP for 1968. The 1968 models' parts catalogs are available at the BRP site.

Ah, it's from experience. I was helping a guy with a Fat Fifty once. We finally got it running OK, in a barrel on the transom of his boat. I was standing on the throttle side of the engine, and the guy was up at the console. He put it it forward and goosed the throttle.

It wasn't the unexpected bath that got to me, it was all that floating oil froth on the water. Blech! I believe I may even have said a bad word. :D

Thanks for the help, I saw the screen above the prop and was not sure if the muffs would work, they are simpler than the garbage can. However if I feel the need to go the big bucket route, I'll try to remember not to engage the gears. I prefer beer to oily water. Thanks again...,mike

get the water 1/2 way up the leg. there was an adapter for them but they are scarce.
