I am having starting issues. My engine is a 1997 Volvo Penta 5.7L TBI. I can unplug the ect sensor and the engine will crank up as soon as you turn the key, but with the sensor plugged in I have to keeping cranking to try to get it started. I have replaced the ect sensor, but didn't fix the issue. I recently (couple week ago) replaced the low pressure fuel cell, because the old one had gotten weak. I will say with the sensor plugged in, on a cold start the engine will fire up, but as the rpm's come down to idle it will shut off. When I try to start it again it just want to crank. Any ideas??

Thanks,

If you hold the throttle wide open when you crank it, will it start then? If so, the computer thinks the engine is at a temp that its not and adjusts the fuel inappropriatly for the start temp. If its a new ECT, check the lines between it and the computer, as well as the grounds.

Might be that your ECT sensor is drawing to much power (a bit shorted out) and will not allow the voltage to come up to levels needed to start. Connect a voltmeter on the hot side without it connected and compare to with it connected
