Starting Issues: Turn Key, Nothing. . .

Ok, so Sunday when I was heading in from the boat, I had an issue with starting it. I would turn the key, and there would not even be so much as a click. I respliced the wires at the ignition, and it worked fine.

Fast forward to today, I wanted to clean up the connections, as on Sunday all I could do was wrap bare copper around posts. I broke one of the posts off the ignition, so I just went and got a new one. Put the new one in, it started fine, I tried to tweak it afterwards (it hung out of the dash too much), and after I tweaked it, I turned the key and nothing. It clicked the next time, but would not start. I noticed my tach was staying at about 400 with the boat off, which is a new issue.

I am thinking something is shorted out, but did not have my MM handy at the time, any suggestions? The terminals on the starter are corroded, so I will replace those when I get a chance. Is there anything else that I should be looking for?

Thank You

Thank you for the replies, the funniest thing about this is I never had a problem, until I went to turn the key last weekend and it did a complete 360! I guess the nut came loose holding it on, but after I tightened it, the key did nothing. I got it to work after that, but I don't know if that is part of the problem, or just a completely annoying coincidence.
