Good afternoon,

Have a 1965 Sea ray 900 i'm attempting to bring back into service. The motor is a 150 hp I6, the outdrive is a mod I or II as best i can tell. I haven't been able to find the serial number on the outdrive to say for certain what it is. I've attached a link to the picture.

The motor i'm comfortable with, my question is in regards to that outdrive. Other than the lower unit, where are the lubrication points on it? What oils do i need to replace before attempting to spin it?

Lastly, what manuals do others recommend. I've found some on here, amazon and stemtostern.com.

Thanks
Matt

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid145/p6c4dd95214c79f46ec46ac2f69b44ffd/f669c3fc.jpg

On a 150 HP that would be a 1/C look on the upper gearcase under the port side of the gear housing cavity for the serial number

northern

i would recomend pulling the drive and draining the drive oil and pressure testing the unit as step one

if its good great if not you no before you go to far

if the drive checks out good the next most likely problem will be the drive shaft bellows the rubber will almost 100% be bad from sitting so long and if it leaks it will cause drive damage

tommays

Re: Starting old motor / outdrive

good morning. thanks for the replys. last night i dug around with the trouble light in hand looking for a serial number plate. none to be found on the outside. the inside plate says look at the outside plate...hmmm.

I looked at the bellows while digging around for the serial number, they actually look good. the boat was well maintained and used as recently as a few years ago. still recommend pulling the outdrive? who can pressure test them and for what kind of money? I'm all for finding show stoppers now.

One weird thing I cannot explain. I lowered the drive from full up to down and some green liquid, looked like anti-freeze (was not oily) ran out of the hub where the prop shaft is? any ideas?

Thanks again
Matt

northern

http://www.mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm

most of the checking things is pretty simple the hard pasrt comes if anything needs to come apart

things like the bellows will take out a good drive if there allowed to fail because theres really no way to tell its leaking until its to late

the green sounds like antifreeze from a winterize

tommays

still recommend pulling the outdrive?
After sitting for "A Few Years" yes, pull the drive and at least inspect the gimbal bearing, ujoints, and check the alighnment, and lube the shaft.
If you pull the drive, drain the gear lube, and take it to a Mercruiser dealer, they can pressure and vacuum test the drive for you. Or you can get a vacuum/pressure tester at most auto stores, make yourself an adapter and check it yourself.
But before you do that, get a Merc service manual. Your local Mercruiser dealer can order you one, it has all the info you need for both your engine and drive.
Service manual part number is 90-68648.
When you put the drive down, it was probably antifreeze and through the engine when it was winterized. That is a good thing, it means your engine probably doesn't have any freeze damage.

Thanks all. I work with the son of the late owner who said that his dad did indeed pour antifreeze in places to displace any water to prevent freeze-up. I am relieved. He is going to come over this weekend, maybe we'll pull the outdrive. to take a peek.

Matt

Hi Matt,

The www.mercstuff.com site id pretty good, but I think it really start at 1972 and younger. Your drive looks a whole lot like my Type 1a. As I learned, with much great help from these forums, is that the Type 1a, 1b, and 1c designations are related to the HP of the engine (and the resultant gear ratio of the outdrive). I have a 110 HP so the 1a is my outdrive (1.98:1 ratio).

Once you get the serial number, I would recommend www.dougrussell.com. They have access to a lot of loder parts and have already helped me a bunch. Given the age, I would recommend calling them tomorrow and speak with Jeffrey, his is a big help but he is off on Thursdays

Good luck
Ethan
