I have a 1984 Mariner 30 HP outboard motor which I have taken off of my pontoon boat for some repairs (water pump replacement). It has an electric starter for starting while its on the boat. It also has a pull cord for starting. My question is is there anything I need to do to the wiring harness that goes to the boat to bypass the key switch and allow me to use the pull cord to start the motor in a bucket of water. I know the kill switch wiring goes to the harness and is an open circuit when the harness is unplugged. The reason I am asking is because the motor is with me at home and the boat is at the cottage. The boat is a Misty Harbour, 1998 pontoon boat if that is of any relavance. Any response would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It will run without the harness youll need to be able to choke it and you ll need to be able to stop it.You can stop it with the choke or find the kill switch circuit(black w yellow tracer)<br /> Just short to ground to stop.

Re: Starting outboard off of boat

thanks steelspike. The motor does have a manual choke switch so that isn't a problem. I do have the manual for the outboard with wiring diagrams. The kill circuit is a white wire coming from the CDI unit which needs to be grounded to "kill" the motor. I just wasn't sure how the wiring harness going to the boat would effect this circuit. Thanks again.
