starting problem

while i was on the lake last summer it was really hot out and wghen i would go to start the motor all i would get is a click but if the motor was cold it would turn over with no problem it is a 89 3.0 mercruiser and i have read a couple of little thing about heat soak any thoughts

Ayuh,.....

I'd start by removing,+ Cleaning the Wire ends on All the wires between the Battery,+ the Starter, along with the Battery's Ground wires.....

Heat soak is merely a Remote possibility.....

Sounds like a questionable ground that gets worse with heat.....
Do what Bondo said, solenoid too.....;)

When checking the battery cables, don't forget there are at least 2 cables, Positive and negative. Have found many cables that have the terminals loose on the cable. If you have wingnuts on your battery terminals, remove them and put on some regular nuts and use a wrench to tighten them. At least use some pliars to tighten the wingnuts if you can't replace them right then.
If that is all OK, try this test.
