I took my boat out yesterday and it ran fine and started and shut off a couple of times with no problem. Untill the last time It would turn over buy would not start. Luckilly after a good five minutes of on and off trying and a can of starting fluid out of my emergency box it started sputtering and finally started. I did an oil change before my last trip out and put too much oil in and when I was running at 4000rpm the engine was bogging out and spirting oil everywhere so I took it home and sucked oil out and cleaned the boat. Did I break anything with too much oil? Also I am planning on a tune up including replacing points with electronic. Would this help?
This is an 85 Sunbird with a aq 125a 270 outdrive.

Re: Starting problem

You have a lot going on here. Spewing oil doesn't sound like a "little" overfill on oil problem!

Look inside the distributor cap. Oil in there? Clean it up and then make sure you have the CORRECT amount of oil in the engine. Be sure it is indeed an overfilled oil problem and not a cracked block/manifold issue that makes the oil "grow". Yes, an electronic ignition is nice in many ways. (No need to set dwell, no variation in dwell angle, crisp electrical connection, etc.)

Don't want to sound silly here but are you sure how much oil is required in this thing? Is it a Volvo 4 banger or a V8 engine? How and why did you get so much oil in it?

Re: Starting problem

Ita a volvo 4 banger...lol aq 125a
I changed the oil using a vacuum oil sucker thing then put the amount in the engine called for not thinking about if there would be oil left in the motor from sucking it out instead of draining it. So I think I really overfilled it. Its pouring out so I'll take the cover off this weekend and check the dist. cap out.
