starting problem

i have a 1988 bayliner capri with an omc 2.3. I just got the boat and it will not start, it sounds like its trying to start but wont. It is getting fuel and i put a spark tester on it, at first it did not have sparked until i cleaned the points. I replaced the plugs today and the distributor cap and rotor look good and i still have the same issue. I dont know what else it could be. someone please help before i set this boat on fire

Howdy,


If you are SURE you have fuel (try dumping a little gas in the carb)

Then click the following link on ignition. If the engine has fuel and ignition (and compression) it should start.

Thank you for the link, i ended up having to replace the points and condenser and i got it to fire, but the only way it will fire is to have it at wide open throttle and i can slowly bring it down some but it wont idle. i think the carb may be gummed up alittle from sitting so i pulled it off and im gonna take it to work and tear it down and clean it. i will post how everything goes
