Hi guys. new to this site. Have a Bayliner Capri with 85 hp force. Been sitting awhile and cleaned starter and still won't turn over. Flywheel turns hard but starter just won't turn motor over. Any ideas? Never had a boat b4

What exactly do you mean by flywheel turns over hard? If you could post on here all
the things you have already done then that would be very helpful. As for starter, make sure
battery is good and fully charged. Check all connections from battery to starter, make sure they are clean and none loose. Make sure starter is bolted up tight and if there are any bolts on the bottom of starter housing they should be tight as well. By the way. What year is your motor?

Re: starting problem

It's a 86 and pulled plugs and can turn flywheel by hand and getting spark to all three plugs. Plus accidently touched my arm to engine and got crap shocked out of me while holding one of plugs. Charged battery, plugs out and son started it and eveything turns fine with starter until plugs go back in. Sat for two years so maybe battery is shot

Check your wiring. Make sure you have the engine adequately grounded. You need a surprising amount of ground wire and 12v+ to be adequate in order to start the engine. Otherwise it may crank over slow. also check your connections at your battery terminal. Other solutions may include weak battery or starter.

Re: starting problem

I?d start by trying to isolate the problem. Test the starter first after you are sure the battery is OK. Have your battery tested to make sure it is OK.

With the ignition OFF and in NEUTRAL get a pair of heavy jumper leads and test the starter.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FROM THE BOAT?S WIRING.

MAKE SURE THE IS NO FUEL LYING AROUND AS THE CABLE MAY CAUSE SPARKS WITH THIS TEST.

BE CAREFUL OF MOVING PARTS.

ONLY TOUCH THE CABLES TO THE STARTER FOR SHORT PERIODS AS THE IS NO FUSE IN THIS SYSTEM.

SOME GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION WOULD BE USEFUL.

Connect the positive jumper cable to the positive battery terminal & then connect the other end to the positive terminal on the starter. Then connect the negative jumper cable to the negative terminal of the battery. Be careful of the next step as sparks will come from the jumper cable end. Touch the negative jumper cable end to the outside case of the starter. The starter should work if it is OK. You don?t need to crank the starter for long. If this works we will move on to the next test.

Good Luck

Re: starting problem

If the battery has stood for 2 years it will be scrap ...solid with sulphate ..when storing a battery always charge every 3 months ..

Re: starting problem

After all the other things try.
If it turns over without the plugs:spray a bit of WD-40 in the cylinders.
Do a compression test.
If it still won't turn easily.Pull the lower unit off and see if it makes a difference.
If it's sat with water in the drive the bearings might be corroded making it hard to turn over.
I have a lower that's sat with water and it's impossible to turn over with the starter. It's gonna be used for alum.scrap.
