I have a 1992 5.8 HO with King cobra outdrive . I started the boat at home , it ran good . Went to the water and it would not start . The only way it will run is if I hold the key in the run position . Soon as I turn the key loose it quits . Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Welcome aboard Thomas:

What about the key switch itself? Any reason not to suspect it? I'm not sure how to test one, but that's only a Google away I'm sure.

Yes , bruceb58 man overboard switch checks OK .
Did you check voltage after the switch with the key in the run position?

You need to get out your meter and measure the voltage on your ignition wire from the ignition switch all the way back to the engine with the switch in the run position.

The reason it wants to start while cranking is because that voltage is supplied from the cranking circuit.
