I own a 1975 Merc 85hp. I've owned it for two years now but i've been having trouble starting it. I have to use starting fluid or else it just won't fire up. Also, when I do finally get it started it will not plane out. It only runs at about 2000rpms. Could my carbs be clogged? I have good compression in all cylinders and plenty of spark. I just can't get her up and going!

Any help would be greatly apprcieted.

Re: starting problems

chiz, please don't use starting fluid to start an outboard. starting fluid does not have oil in it, therefore no lubercation. Yes your carbs could be plugged, or you could have a fuel pump problem. You need to get a service manual to help in cleaning and rebuilding your carbs or fuel pump. Also do a searh for fuel problems. you should also check your fuel tank for water.
Good luck!!

Re: starting problems

Get a manual & read it!!!For an engine to run you need fuel, compression & spark. But for an engine to run well you need all those things at the right time in the right quantities...Clean your fuel system from the tank right thru the carbs.Reset the float levels while the carbs are apart.Reassemble.Do a link & synch put in new plugs. Then adjust the idle mixture screws with the engine running in gear in the water & hopefully your troubles will be gone.Try this & let us know the results :)

Re: starting problems

Chiz:

Cammydog is right about not using starting fluid (or spray) - I mean to do it once might be okay but repeatedly doing it is asking for trouble. If you need something to get it started, try mixing some gas & outboard oil in a Windex bottle and spraying that into the carbs.

But that still won't solve your problem. You definitely have a fuel problem....a restriction in the line or a bad pump, sounds like....wouldn't hurt to rebuild the carbs if it hasn't run correctly for the two years you've had it. Take cammydog's and sharkcat's advice on what to try.

Good luck!
