Re: Starting Procedure 87 Mercury 60Hp
Sure, and welcome to iboats.

if the motor has not been started in a year or so;
First, despose of any fuel that is 6 months old or older, and clean the tanks. Check the inline filter.
If this motor has not been run in a long time, (a year or longer without being started, replace the impeller, as it has formed to the shape of the pump housing. Remove the carb bowls to ensure they are clean.
If it has been run, and well-maintained,
Hook gas to the motor. The lower unit MUST be submerged in water to start the boat. If you want to start it in the driveway, make sure to have "earmuffs" on the lower unit's water-intake.
Make sure the motor is level (in the operating position).

Squeeze primer bulb until it firms-up. Don't keep squeezing it once it has firmed-up.
Ensure that no fuel has been leaking from the carb bowls, or that there is no dripping fuel, or fuel odor comming from under the cowling. This is common on motors that have sat idle for any langth of time,and must be fixed before attempting to start (for obvious reasons).

Press-in on the ignition key. You should hear an audible "CLICK" from the motor. This would be the electric choke solenoid being activeated. It pulls a plunger in,that is attached to the choke butterfly. Hold the key in, and rotate to start until the motor coughs, fires-up...Let out the key (to allow the electric choke to release). If it stalls, try without choke one time. If no go, choke again,until it coughs or starts,release choke. Wait 2 minutes before popping-into gear to leave the dock (in idle).
