starting question

I want to say first I have not tried to start my motor yet. I have rewired everything just not put the battery in. Model # 85ESL-70D.. the gentleman I bought this from said it likes a spray of either to start. What could this mean? One thing I did notice and I don't know if this is normal. I know it is push to choke but there is also a switch that says lift for full choke. On that switch there is only one wire. Is that normal or should there be a second wire to ground? Any help would be great.

Re: starting question

Original setup was lift to choke. Somebody may have replaced the key switch with one that has push to choke. Normally, only one would work. Look at the motor and observe what happens when you operate the switch.

I suspect neither one works. That is based on the one wire you report. That would also explain the either requirement.. Depends on what they did in there.

Bottom line is if you have to spray either in it to start it, there is something wrong. I'm not about to tell you to go out in a boat that is know to have some kind of a problem.

Re: starting question

I could be wrong then on the push to choke. I assumed I guess.. I just know for a fact there is only one wire to the choke switch. I would not feel comfortable using the either so I want to fix it. Is there a second wire to ground on that switch? I know there were no "extra" wires in the wire bundle going back to the motor.

Re: starting question

theres 2 chokes on the motor one is electric one is manual on the motor bottom cowling. If the electric one works from the key then just use that one. If it doesnt work then pull the one out at the motor.

"the gentleman I bought this from said it likes a spray of either to start".....I think the guy was saying Ether which is starting fluid and realy realy bad for 2 strokes.

Johnson Intake Manifold And Carburetor Group Parts for 1970 85hp 85ESL70D Outboard Motor
part #46 shows 2 or 3 wires the older ones may have only one wire and use the body as a ground. If you push the key does it click and close the choke flaps

Re: starting question

Correct.. one wire on the switch. It would be hard to use the body as a ground I think since it is a plastic panel

Re: starting question

I see it actually goes to the solenoid. I will have to look into that

Re: starting question

When I am trying to figure this out, if I flip the switch and nothing happens I can put 12v across the solenoid to see if it pulls in correct?
