I bought a 1969 fastwin 18hp 18902D a few months back and I recently overheated it pretty bad. Compression test failed and when I picked up a 1968 16802M for replacement parts I figured I'd take the opportunity to learn to rebuild these engines. Problem is, I'm pretty new to engine work (a little experience working on old diesels). I was very excited to find this forum and thank everyone in advance for my naive questions
I do have the schematics from ********** for both model engines and while there are clearly some differences in the design of certain components (particularly the carburetor) everything seems to be swappable. Am I missing anything really fundamental here?
My plan at the moment is to actually use the 1968 powerhead with the 1969 lower unit. From there, I want to use whichever component/spring/screw/etc is in better condition between the two engines to arrive at a working composite engine. I will continue to update this thread as I encounter success or failures.
So the first mystery...what is the easiest way to remove the powerhead?
