Long time boater. First time post on Iboats. I've been reading lots of great information on your site.
I picked up a 1970 14' Seaswirl Tri Hull earlier this summer with a 60 HP Evinrude Triumph (Model 60073D). Aside from the non-running motor, the boat and trailer are in excellent shape and were well cared for by the previous owner. Since the 60 horse motor was not running, I decided to pick up a Minn Kota 55lb thrust motor for moving it around a local gas-restricted reservoir, just to get out on the water. We've had great fun but I'm ready to dig in to the real motor now. I've read and researched numerous posts on this site regarding these motors. But I still have a few questions. Also, to note, I have some shade tree mechanical experience, though I'm no expert.
Here's what is obvious:
The motor is clean, no signs of salt water corrosion inside the cover.
The motor turns over when cranking the prop in gear. I have not performed a compression test yet.
The spark amplifier (Motorola 6CB2001) had already been removed from the motor when I bought it. I have it, but the wires are badly frayed where they come out of the unit. Seems I'll need to order a replacement. Where is the best source to find one? What is the replacement part number?
What are the proper tests to do on the ignition system to reduce the risk of blowing a new unit once I get one? Does anyone have a wiring diagram of the amplifier connections (per above mine was already removed and I'm not sure where the new wires connect)?
The boat was last registered in 2013, and I am assuming it ran then. I have not tested the push button transmission.
I need a new gas hose and a new battery, any suggestions as to battery type/amps required for optimal operation?
Thank you. I appreciate all the information on this site and any advice you have on restoring this old boat.
