So today is the day I start the tear down of my boat. I have a 1989 Larson dc-175 that has been dinged up and had some really shotty repairs done on her. This is my first time trying anything like this but from what I read about the rustoleum pro and the topside paint it shouldn't be to bad of a job. I am going with the gloss white rustoleum professional enamel paint with some enamel hardener. going to try and use the roller technique. I have been doing a bit of research on here and watching people do it on youtube. BUT if anyone has any tips they are MUCH APPRECIATED!
Pics a coming soon ( may need some help with that do I need a photobucket?) OK here we go !
WISH ME LUCK!!!

I would get some practice material to try your method out before doing the boat. That's how I plan to do mine when the temps are above 0 here in Michigan. Till then all I have is iboats!!
Post u[p your results so we can at least see what you have accomplished. Can you feel the cabin fever in my typed words??

I read a lot of folks use Rustoleum and roll in on as well and seem to achieve a very nice finish. I'm so use to spraying automotive primers, paints and top coats that I can't change my ways now. But do post your results, I'm certainly interested in how it comes along...

And no need to start a 2nd paint thread.....

Check the paper regularly for loading, 100G isn't too aggressive. Wipe down before sanding helps minimize the amount of crud to load the paper, but you'll have to do lots of cleanup post sanding too.

well its all tore down and I have the top half of the boat sanded. on the bottom of the boat there is a 16'' grey graphic that is hell to take off? if I sand it with the 100 grit it just burns and smears it and if I try to take it off with acetone nothing happens... should I use a heavier grit to cut through it? also once I put down my first few coats and sand it with the 320 is it ok to still use the orbital sander? or do I do it by hand? thanks guys still working on figuring out the picture thing

th
It's called a Decal Eraser. Made by 3M. Works great and won't harm your boat.

Dont use 60 you way over doing it. The very 1st step is to very thourghly was down the hull with a wax remover not acetone it flashes (dry's) way to fast...why is simple your spreading wax and gum all over the place which will cause poor adhesion. Second sand down with 200 grit...now if you have a old hull you may have to change paper a lot to get its full cutting potential...lots of old gel that's shot can really clog up sand paper. Dont sweat prepainted area's or pre-gelled area's after all you are going to have to paint over a few time's..Painting a finish is not one shot..its more like building up to a final finish and everything you do prior to the Final finish has a big impact on the final finish...look....or overall job

well i didnt see your post til today and i used the 60 on the decals. they definitely came off... i am actually glad i used a heavier grit because i found a huuuge spot where there must have been a big hole or something? tons of bondo and fiberglass patch. i brought over a friend who paint and does body work he says the patch is very solid and was done correctly with the proper fillers. (its some sort of green epoxy not bondo) anyways i have one side completely done, this weekend i will start to sand the other side. i am definitely going to use a wax remover and not the acetone anymore. this is a huge learning experience cant back out now though!

okay I put the first coat on today, this is waaaaay harder than youtube makes it look! lol I started out with a few disasters my compressor took a dump 2 mins into spraying?? had to run and grab another one. but the big issue I am having is there is a ton of little air bubbles? what do I do to eliminate this? also what pressure do you guys recommend the gun be at? I am sure my technique is way wrong also...

This Might help...HVLP Spray Gun Setup
That's a bit HIGH on the MS. Pressure is about right. Inline Filters at the Gun Handle? Sounds like the paint's not atomizing at the tip properly. Read the link and Practice on some Cardboard. You'll figure it out. Once you get it set up right, then it IS as easy as YouTube makes it look!!!:D
