Hi!

It's funny that when you get one boat working the other breakes down.

My Johnson 60Hp -89 had the following symptoms:

- low power
- low compression (about 95 in all 3)
- rattling sound (knocking?, detonation?)
- overheating (no alarm, no S.L.O.W, hot to touch)
- leaking carbs from the front

So I finally took the head off and found marks on the head and pistons that I think are from broken rings. Could it be so that these ring pieces have found their way into the exhaust? Can I open the exhaust cover without taking the engine totally apart (the lower bolts look a little tight towards engine outside cover)?

I will take the boat home tonight and start the repair. I hope that I only have to change the rings after cleaning the cylinder walls. Should I do something about the cylinder head?

One cause to the problem was a defective t-stat. I put it in hot water but nothing happened. I believe that one should notice when it opens.

I will include pictures here when I come further with the repair.

Robbi

Re: Starting to repair a Johnson 60Hp -89!

Have now looked closer at the cylinders and pistons. Seems like the engine has earlier been rebuilt. The problem is that the pistons are too small so the clearance is too much. Thats why the compression readings are so low. Otherwise are at least the upper rings intact.

Pulled out the intkake and reed blocks. Crankcase looked fine with no signs of damage. Two reed blocks are leaking. I believe that fuel sprays out of carbs are caused by the leaking reeds.

I'm planning of doing a complete rebuild on the enngie with new Wiseco pistons and Boyesen power reeds. Also a used cylinder head without damage would be nice. But I can't afford it this summer. So I think I will buy new original reeds, t-stat and all gaskets that are needed and put the engine back together.

Hopefully it will run without problem and I can then start the rebuilding after I have taken the boat ashore for the winter.

Any comments or suggetions?

By the way, how can I attach pictures in my posts?

B.R.
Robbi
