My 1977 does not like to start after being shutdown for sometime. If I weere to run my boat today, trailered it then launched at the same time tomorrow, It would not want to start. If I am out on the lake and decide to stop and take a break from boating for a half hour then went to restart, it would fire right up. It was suggested to me that it might be a fuel pump. I thought about replacing it but I can not justify the price if this just might be what it is.
I have new plugs in it, new wires, etc. Are these older ones just stubborn or should something be rebuilt or rreplaced? Maybe I should just continue to carry a can of starting fluid and use that each time I go to start the engine cold?

My 1977 Apollo 18' 140hp OMC.
It cranks fine and it is getting a spark because when I spritz it with starting fluid it will fire right up.

Re: Starting Trouble

What is your exact starting procedures when cold, and when hot?
Sure hope you aren't trying to start it like a car that has fuel injection. A carb is a whole lot different to start.

Re: Starting Trouble

If it fires right up when you squirt something into the carb, then its clearly a fuel releated problem. Either the choke circuitry is not working, or you have no fuel in the carb. My guess is that the choke is not working due to either a faulty choke circuit, or incorrect starting procedure..
So as asked before, what is you procedure to start the engine when cold? Do you just turn the key, or are you playing with the throttle before you turn the key?

Re: Starting Trouble

Are you pumping the throttle twice, and leaving it where idle would be about 1200 rpm?
Is the acellerator pump working?

Re: Starting Trouble

When starting it I "pump" the throttle a few times then, like you say, open it about 1/4 throttle. It seems that once i spray it with starting fluid it will fire, then die. Squirt it with starting fluid again, runs for a few seconds. Then uasually on the third try it will fire and continue running. I let it run at about 1200-1400 rpm for a minute or two then I am good to go.
I don't treat my boat like a car with fuel injection as I have a passion for the classics. Anything that uses a carb for fuel delivery takes a little patience.

Ayuh,......

And I'd say that Your's needs a Rebuilding........

It sounds like it's leaking off Internally,......

You can Pump the throttle til 'ell freezes over,+ it won't do a Thing when the Bowl is Dry..........
