I have a 1989 305(5.0) Mercruiser- In a 1989 20 Foot Regal.

When i turn the ignition, sometimes the engine cranks over great. And other times i just hear the single click of the solonoid on the engine. I have new batteries, and know it is not the batteries. I took off the wires to the ignition and cleaned them (they were not corroided at all) I have looked at the wiring going to the starter, and it looks good also. I dont have a manual to this boat yet, but am planning on getting on soon. This boat only has 244 hours, so things should not be worn out at all yet. I have tried to wiggle every wire i see, and nothing seems to make a difference. It just starts when it wants to.

Any ideas?

It wouldn't be the ignition wires causing problems. It's typically either the cable connections or a bad slave or starter solenoid. Don S has posted a "no start" diagnosis link, but I don't have it handy. Basically you need to check the voltage at the slave solenoid and the starter solenoid. Thinking of the solenoids as just big electrical switches - a click usually means when the solenoid (switch) is engaged, the electrical current is not being passed through. (The inside of the solenoid is usually burned or pitted - caused by low voltage most of the time).

Ayuh,.... Looks can be deceiving....

And,... What about the Ground side of the circuit,..??

Remove, Sand, Clean, Reinstall,+ Grease ALL of the starter's wiring.....

If that doesn't cure the problem,....
