Starting

My boat will not start in neutral but it will start in forward or reverse but the second I go into neutral it dies. What would cause this? It’s a 1976 mercruiser 165 inline 6.

Key (ignition) switch or N (throttle/shift lever actuated) safety switch in the control box.
