Hey everyone,

This trouble is with a 2003 Reinell 20' Ski/fish with the 5.0 Volvo GL-B. (275 hours). This year I've had it out about 4 or 5 times and noticed an issue that seems to be getting worse:

Initial start and run is good, I usually run for about 45 minutes to a fishing spot. Then, after fishing for an hour I fire it up and take off. The engine gets about up to plane, or maybe on plane for a few (it varies), then it shuts down completely and won't start for about 3-5 minutes. This happens twice on a trip. It MAY be helped if I let it idle for 3 minutes prior to taking off but i only tried that once...it did help whether randomly or not.

-There is a burning odor somewhere north of the drivers seat (smells maybe like burning plastic or something.
-The odor is not around the engine compartment
-When I try to restart it acts like the kill switch isn't attached (it is but I usually disconnect and reattach). The engine eventually, reluctantly sometimes, starts.
-I do air out the engine compartment, using the blower prior to running, and also have opened the hatch after this happens, just to be sure.
-The most troubling thing is the burning smell....maybe around the ignition, maybe around the kill switch...idk.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

first, prior to using the boat again, I would suggest servicing things and finding what is burning

Of course, I ordered a new ignition just in case but I'm really wondering if the kill switch is bad...or dying. It really acts like you disconnected it mid-stroke because it feels like all of the sudden I either turned the boat off, or took off kill switch. The burning smell is the weird part...

If you can use an IR temp gun around the wiring to figure out what is getting hot enough to create the burning smell.
