Hi. I have a 1997 3.0 mercruiser engine in my bowrider. After driving it awhile,I'll stop for lunch. When I go to restart, it cranks over for a longtime before it starts up. any ideal what it could be? Thanks in advance.

What method do you use to restart it? In other words, do you have to pump the throttle as if it were a cold engine? What exactly works to get it restarted? You are either rich or lean at restart. First thing I would look at is where the choke plate is sitting at after your through with lunch. If you have only sat for a short period of time, the choke plate should still be in the open or almost open position. If it's wound too tight, this would cause a rich starting condition on an already warm engine. Second scenario would be that the carb is dumping fuel while your sitting. This also would cause a rich restart. If that is the problem, starting the boat with the throttle at WOT helps with the restart and is the same procedure you would use on a car if it's flooded. Third scenario is that the carb is leaking down while your sitting due to a faulty needle and seat or bad float. The restart on this would be having to pump the accelerator as if the engine were cold because the engine is starved for fuel. Next time this happens, pull the spark arrestor off and see where the choke plate is sitting at. There should be no or little tension on the plate. Next, pump the accelerator and see if there is fuel being shot down the venturi. You have to play detective on this one before you can cure it. Keep us posted.

Thank you very much for your detailed response to my question. What I usually do is just crank the motor without pumping the throttle. I don't pump it,worrying about flooding it. I will look and see where the position of the choke is. Should it just start at idle....or should I advance the throttle? By the way....what does WOT mean. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Depending on how long it has sat for usually just a turn of the key. After say an hour or more of sitting you may have to pump it once or twice if the motor has coolded down quite a bit. Another thing, before restarting, look down the venturi of the carb and work the accelerator by hand. You should see a good stream of fuel. If not the carb could be leaking down. Carb rebuilds are fun if you have some cold ones and nothing else to do. Keep updating.
