Starts on second try???

Just had some service done on my boat. I had the head gasket replaced, carburetor kit, plugs, timing etc. I would think after all that it would start right up. But even after the engine is warmed up it usually takes two tries to get it started. It doesn't have EFI.. I understand having to crank a little when I first start it, but not after it's warmed up. It seems like if it sits for more than a minute or two I have to crank it twice to get it to pop off. After that it runs great. Is this normal? Any ideas?

most motor wont start with the throttle all the way back.Try leaving the throttle slightly advanced.

Before the work it started about the same. Not sure what kit they used but it's a very good marine shop that has been around for over 30 years. I just figured after it was warmed up I wouldn't need to give it throttle. Do you think I would be better to give the throttle a pump before starting or just giving a little gas while starting?

Ayuh,.... Generally speakin', carbed motors need abit of throttle when startin',...

If the throttle advancing does not work, then it *could* be that the fuel is draining from the carburetor quickly, requiring that extra cranking of the engine to bring it back up.

Things to check in that case would be the fuel pump and perhaps the fuel tank venting.

i go with just a little throttle when starting warm. i'd think a full pump when warm would be too much.
