Stater & Rectfier

Hi All! We have a 1972 Evinrude 65hp motor. The problem we were having with it was that under a load it wouldn't go, we think we have that problem fixed. The other problem is that something is draining the battery. We're not sure what that is and we took it to a guy who works on boats and he got to looking at it and said that the stater was bad, so he replaced that. That didn't fix the problem, and he looked further into it and said that the rectifier had a short in it? Does that sound right? We are new to having a boat and don't want to end up spending a lot of money on fixing this old boat. He said the new rectifier would cost around $190. If any has any other suggestions, or comments, we would greatly appreciate them. Thanks!

Rick&Leslie..... My advice to you is to remove your boat/engine from that fellows location.

He may, in time, get to the point whereas he knows how to trouble shoot a battery drain, but as it stands, it appears that his tatics leaves something to be desired.

The original OMC and superceeded part numbers for the rectifier (a small 3 wire component) are: 580841 (original), 582307, 582399, 583408 (latest number), and the unit lists for approximately $50.00. It can be purchased at Sierra for considerably less, possibly also NAPA.

The way to check a batter drain is to remove the battery cables from one battery post, the conect a volt meter between the battery post and the cables. If there's a battery drain, the meter will indicate that fact. Then it's a matter of trial and error (sort of) by disconnecting one item after another while viewing the meter.

If you disconect the red wire leading to the rectifier and the drain disappears, it's logical to assume that the rectifier is the problem.
