I recently began having a problem getting up on plane. I put in as usual and started up the lake but the engine started coughing and gagging as I started up on plane. I idled around trying to get it up, and it seemed it was "trying" to catch up, but it never did.

I trailered and noticed unusual grease on the hub. I checked the lower unit fuel and found water. I have had the lower unit rebuilt. The mechanic told me to try it now, but I have not went back to the lake as of yet (its quite the distance). I can't check it at home because it only dies under load.

My questions are this:

Can a lower unit cause this symptom. I think not?

It had been a long while since I ran the engine. Does this sound like a fuel problem? Or a stator problem?

How can I diagnose the difference between a stator issue and a fuel issue?

Finally, if its a stator, is that a job and novice mechanic can handle? I'm not all thumbs, but I'm not a grease monkey either.

I am suspecting a stator right now based on what I have read. Just wanted to get opinions. I gotta do something...my sons are about to fish all over themselves.

I have the same problem right now and the exact same motor. It idles fine and when I push up the throttle (not in gear) it operates as advertised. When I put a load on it however it maxes out around 2500-3000 rpms. Sometimes it acts like it catches and want to go. Also, it will occasionally surge. Does this sound familiar or we working two different issues?

It sounds exactly the same. Mine will not get above 1800 RPM, and sounds almost like fuel starvation. It acts like it wants to go, but it never takes off. Mine also will rev to max in neutral, but acts as explained under load.

I went to the lake today after I posted the message, and it really sounds like fuel starvation. Or maybe air starvation, because I'm getting a good bit of blue smoke, but I always have. My compression is excellent, and the lower unit is new.

It has been suggested to me that it is the stator. It seems there is a three stage stator on this engine, for low, medium and high speed. A mechanic speculated the medium stage was out.

Hopefully we will get some feedback here. :)

Before suspecting the stator, check the carburators for crud.Install a quality fuel filter(if none).Do not attempt stator replacement without proper tools and manual.Just a thought ;) .

Try choking the engine when it's trying to get up and see if that helps or hurts.

c/6

Hooty
