1994 Mercury 175

Problem: Volt meter on dash goes on with key but does not register voltage once engine on. Took a battery meter and put on the battery when engine is running showing 13 volts, but did not move at all with increase of idle. Also, tach is not working. This weekend I put the upper regulator on the bottom and moved the bottom one to the top and still the tach didnt work, and the volt gauge on the dash did not register. I did notice burn marks on the back of each regulator. I have ordered 2 new regulators since this seems like the cause, but still want to confirm. Could they short out again if the stator is bad. Please help with other suggestions to test the stator or the regulators. I am mechanical savy, all suggestions welcome. Much appreciated.

Re: Stator or Voltage Regulators Help!!!!!

Not an expert but when my 50hp quit registering voltage, the tach didn't work either, indicating burnt rectifier. Mine burnt out because the prior owner put in a red stator upgrade and only regulated one side of the stator. That regulator was also burnt like yours is and it blew the rectifier. I replaced the regualtor and rectifier with a combo regulator/rectifier which regulates both sides of stator.

Jerry

Re: Stator or Voltage Regulators Help!!!!!

I have a similar problem. Tach, volt, temp, trim and oil/temp horn works intermittenly on my 1989 Mercury 175 on a Laguna. Was wondering if you had similar problems and if you fixed your problem.
