Stator Question

My 1988 Evinrude 70 VRO starts and runs well. However, it does not charge the battery.

I had a bad rectifier which I will replace.

The stator, when I test it according to procedure in shop manual, shows the proper resistance (2.4 ohms or whatever it is) but may be grounded out according to second test. I need to repeat the test to confirm.

My questions:

1) If the stator is grounded, would the engine run or would the ignition system fail?
2) If I replace the rectifier to see if it then works, could a grounded stator damage the new rectifier?

Thanks.

Re: Stator Question

1. If the alternator coils are grounded, it could run but not charge the battery. The coils that power the ignition are separate from the alternator coils, on the same stator.

2. Not likely.

3. Try to determine what caused the rectifier to blow, or you might blow another one....instantly.
