I know about the alternator kit for these. But I have a good spare stator. It's a 1982 imperial 19ft bow rider. Mercruiser 470 and I need to change the stator. What's all involved? Can't find a online Manuel few forums have said you need a Puller others have said you need to raise the engine a couple inches... Can anyone give the right input thanks guys.

get a harmonic balancer puller,A GOOD ONE has a button to protect the nose of the crankshaft.
UNHOOK THE BATTERY
remove the balancer, 3 0r 4 bolts for the stator, replace stator, install balancer using the installation tool DO NOT HAMMER IT BACK ON
the installation tool is some threaded rod the same as the crank bolt and a stack of spacers.you draw it back into place.

What's your symptoms to cause you to want to replace the stator? Hopefully not excessive voltage. I didn't have to raise my engine, depends on the boat. If you do.... pull the drive first. You can rent a harmonic balancer puller/installer from Auto Zone for free. Oh yeah here's the manual for you... it's already on the correct page: http://boatinfo.no/lib/mercruiser/manuals/mercruiser8.html#/152
Drops voltage as the days goes on. We tested everything and the stator tested bad. I only run the boat down to a spot anchor and out chill for the day.

I replaced mine years ago with no problem.. Because of over voltage,, so what's the deal with "What's your symptoms to cause you to want to replace the stator? Hopefully not excessive voltage." .

I don't know what cause it to fail. I took it out the first day I owned it ran the radio for about twenty mins went to turn on the boat to charge the battery and it was already dead. So I jumped it with a jumper box and drove it down the river about 20mins and it died. So. I had towed to the dock. Came home charged the battery went back out drove for a while on the river. We anchor and hung out for awhile went to start it wouldn't start so we jump box it again it started and drove it to the dock.

Looks like adding something makes everything else disappear. I had asked if your boat has a voltmeter or if you have a hand held one. And if when you charged up the battery if the charger did show a full charge,, and how old the battery is.

The majority of the time, voltage output issues on these engines is caused from a failed voltage regulator not the stator.

The VR is the weak link in the charging system.

I would just convert it over to alternator. The voltage regulators are rare for those.

please help. I have an 86 charger with a 200 v6 evinrude. I went the lake last week and boat ran great for three days.fourth day we were tubing for several hours stopping and swimming here and there turning the motor off and on countless times.went back to camp to eat and had motor off for about an hour. went to go back out and crank crank crank no pop. I have always been able to get this motor started but not that time. I got it home and disconnected the main harness and jumped the starter and it fired up. I put a brand new ignition switch in and it still wont start with key. disconnect harness and jump starter fires right up. when I plug the harness in while itsrunning it dies when I get the too connections close together. with key crank crank crank no pop. disconnect jump starter fires up. please help

OK thanks,, I did replace the VR first and that didn't fix the problem.. Replacing the stator did,, as it was shorting to ground.

I don't think there's anyway I'm going to be able to use a puller like that. My motor only has about 3in in front of fit get the stator out.
That is not a puller it is an installer, and you can make it as short as necessary.

Well know I'm stuck can't get the cover off no room in this little section to work with. Tighten the bolt hoping the cover would just go one no luck. I have a voltmeter on the boat and a hand held one. Tested everything and stator came back bad. The battery is new and that was tested as well.
