Hi everyone, I've been attempting to find the correct replacement stator for this older Merc 85hp Outboard, but no one I've contacted can figure it out, as the serial number pulls up nothing for anyone including me. Anyone have any ideas based on the serial number and photo's I've posted? Pretty sure is a 75-76 Thunderbolt 850. The Stator is sitting on top as I have removed it, but it has NO part number on it ANYWHERE! Thanks in advance!

Your Mercury 85HP 4 cyl is a 1976. The serial number range is 4366802 - 4590511.

The stator part number(s) are as follows:

398-5454A26 Mercury Quicksilver
18- 5859 Sierra
174-5454K 1 CDI Electronics

Chances are you can buy right here at iBOATS.

Got that Stator replaced, due to no spark at the plugs, as the wires were G-O-N-E as in brittle and broken, but still no spark. Any ideas where to go next? The switch box was recently replaced, maybe the coil packs?

BTW, the engine ran strong just the day before, and great for well over several months, then, all of a sudden, will turn over strong, but, will not run/no spark at plugs. All 4 compression checks are at 120 across. Something electrical/ignition are bad. Have no clue

Go to the cdielectronics dot com site and click on the troubleshooting guide to test your ignition system.

Will do, and as for the Neutral Safety Switch, I bypassed it as it gave me nothing but problems. Solved that issue. Just posted another thread asking for more help, as I was checking for bad wires and wiring harness, and when I went to unplug the engine to control box harness,(looked rusted and corroded at the pins) it completely fell apart, and I have NO clue what wires go to which as all the wires broke, leaving no color insulation left.

Here's a link to a wiring diagram: http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Wir...82561_BACK.gif

I ended up with a bad stator and regulator / rectifier on my 1995 90HP Force but I figured on a motor that old replace everything. I replaced the stator, trigger, recifier / regulator, control box, coils, wires and ignition switch.

That's a great wiring diagram, wish the colors were labeled ( A, B, C etc ) like the Control box harness is, so I knew which colors connect to which from the engine harness wires. Kinda like "A" would connect to "D".
