stator test

how can i test my stator on my 1981 90hp evinrude? i think its breaking down after getting hot. i have a multi meter. and when doing a spark test, do i need to use the tester that you can set a gap on or will just the one that lights up work fine?

One that lights up is pretty handy, i use neither, perhaps im cheap but i just hold it off with pliers

today i checked the spark gap and was getting a good hot spark on all 4. except on 2 this is what happened good spark intermittent when the spark stopped the coil was arcing from mounting bolt to the back of the coil.. just had a spark coming right out of the coil housing arcking right to the mounting bolt. both coils that were doing this was on the same side. what does this mean? i believe i should be shopping for 2 new coils..

i thought so. but wanted someone elses opinion besides my own. when boats are involved my opinions arent worth the effort to follow. but thanks for the re assurance.
