hello to all. I have a 1977 70hp evinrude. I just got my DVA adapter for my multi meter so I can test the stator, etc. can someone tell me what the multi meter is to be set at for testing and procedures for this

The DVA is explained on page 3 of the CDI troubleshooting guide. It measures the peak of AC voltage. On your engine you want to test the cranking voltage outputs of both the stator and the timer base. The stator output is measured between the brown wire and the brown wire with the yellow tracer. Expect voltage to be between 150 and 400 volts. Less than that and the stator is condemned. The timer base cranking voltage is expected to be 0.6 volts measured between the black wire with the white tracer and the white wire with the black tracer. If both of those test out ok, then the process of elimination gets you to the power pack or bad coil.

its difficult to determine the color of the stator wires. the ones I test is the ones going to the powerpack? or the terminal block

ok again thanks to everyone for all the help. I connected the dva adapter to the two stator wires that was going to the terminal block and cranked the engine and got 14.5. bad stator right?

I forgot to ask this but do I take all spark plugs out for these tests so it will crank faster
