stator/tilt and trim relationship question

I have a '79 100hp Johnson I am replacing because I can't afford or have the skills (not to mention time) to rebuild. I am looking at a used motor that is almost identical but it's a manual tilt model. I plan on using the tilt and trim from my old motor and was noticing that on the BRP parts list that they use a 10 amp stator on the power tilt model and a 6 amp stator on the manual tilt model...swapping the stators out seems simple enough but my questions are; will I need the special flywheel puller mentioned in the manual (or is there something else that will work), will the timing have to be adjusted once the new stator is installed and the flywheel reattached and lastly, what would happen if I added the tilt and trim system and just left the 6 amp stator on there?

I dont believe the timing will be different. I thought it was 6 amp manual trim 9 amp power trim . But, 10 amp is close.

A harmonic balancer puller with grade 8 bolts , replacing the ones that come with the puller. If they're not the harder bolts.

Makes a fine puller. Tap on flywheel , as you tighten bolts, may spray a little pb blaster.

Im not sure about leaving the 6 amp. on, is OK , or not.

Im interested as well.

I dont know how it will effect , how the motor runs, if it will.

If you will accept a 2 cents-worth guess, I'd say the larger stator is to keep up with the electrical demands of using the trim a lot, combined with whatever other electrical demands you may have. A battery is just like a bucket. You can only get out of it what you put in it. Take it easy on the trim use (taking out of the bucket) and you might be OK as is.

If you do decide to swap stators, check to see what other components go with the 9 or 10 amp system. It might need a voltage regulator and/or a different rectifier.

Be sure to tighten the flywheel nut with a torque wrench. I think it takes 70-85 ft/lbs, but check it out.

Kind of what I thought. Just like a higher output alternator.

I have the factory 9 amp . trim/tilt set up. But, I would guess the 6 would be , OK.

I only use to trim , on take- off and down on stopping.

I just hate to tell anyone my thoughts , if Im not sure.

But, Im like you, and think it would be ok. Depending on what else is drawing off the battery.

I think your OK too.

The 9 amp was for the greater demands of the TNT.

Many TNT units were dealer installed in those days. I doubt many changed the stators.

Just make sure you have a high capacity battery in good condition.

For what it's worth,its not necessary to change it.I doubt you are going to use tnt so often that your battery will hurt.The higher output is great,especially if your using .pumps,lights ,but Ive seen those units used on the lower amp service many times.
