Re: stator trouble?

could be stator/rectifier/wiring/grounds

(most likely the rectifier)
You need a manual to check your system properly...

Re: stator trouble?

agree with schematic - most likely your rectifier/regulator at fried. Outside chance the stator charging winding (different than the ignition windings) have shorted/opened and not producing enough power. Recommend you pick yourself up a service manual. Normally there are two wires (yellow/green) on merc's coming from the stator headed to the rectifier/regulator. If you have an ohm meter - measure the resistance between these two leds. It should be extremely low resistance (less than 20 ohms). If it is open (no resistance) - then that is the problem and no need to proceed further. Otherwise - sounds more like a rectifier problem. This can be checked by measring the DC output of the rectifier when you start the motor. if the stator is good and no voltage from the rectifier - then it is defective. Good luck and again - a manual is worth it's weight in gold.

Re: stator trouble?

I have the same problem with my 115 hp mercury 1973 and I check the rectifier in a electronic store and the technician says to check stator or grounding cables because the rectifier its in good condition in and out (diodes). :( Also the two cables coming to the rectifier from the stator are registering continuity so the stator its not open.????? Cooney let me know how you fix your problem please...Thanks

la-viejita-73
Check for voltage at the battery while ruuning. Should be 13.5-15v at WOT. If not....
Check rectifier output leads for D/C while running engine. If you have appropriate voltage (13.5-15 volts DC)at the rectifier, but not at the battery, check the wiring and grounds from rectifier to battery.

To prove the stator...check the stator leads for a/c voltage while running engine.
