anyone know of a way to check and see if the Stator is the cause of the Switchbox overheating and shutting down the engine. 60 hp Mercury, 1988 model

Re: Stator

Dale you would almost have to have a DVA to ck for that problem as a ohm meter would not tell you, about the only ck you coul do would be to diconnect the 2 yellow wires from the alternator and run the engine to ck for a shorted rectifier

Re: Stator

Laddies probably knows this better than me, but a Switchbox overheating isn't necessarily the problem. And if it was overheating the stator wouldn't cause it. My guess is that the internal components of the switchbox are going bad or are in degraded condition and the heat of the block will cause those components to go over the "top" so to speak causing it to fail intermittently.

Did you check the spark yet?

Re: Stator

The DVA is a vital tool for diagnostics.but when using it,you DO have to check your stator and trigger with an ohm meter. This a step by step proceedure,so you do need the book.

No,I don't think a stator will overheat your switch box.But look at your stator. If it is dripping goo,all bets are off.

DHP

Re: Stator

The stator should put 180 volt on the low speed and 20 on the high speed The trigger must
put out 4 volts both tests at cranking speed or idle The voltage test is much more accurate than the ohm tests that are used
