Steam from 454 exhaust

Wellcraft with Crusader 454, right engine shows steam from exhaust. There seems to be less water from the exhaust port than from the left engine. New water impeller. Need to know where to check next. Does this system have flapper valves? This is in fresh water.

Starboard engine shows Steam? I assume these crusaders are fresh water cooled. What is the running temp on the Starboard vs the port engine? Is it running hotter? Should be 160 degrees. Is it white smoke or steam. If there is restricted flow from the raw water side, the exhaust manifolds tend to get hotter as well as the engine temp. the exhaust manifolds should be warm to the touch but not so hot that you cant put a hand on it. Changing the impler is a start but you got the heat exchanger, oil cooler, risers, colapsed hoses and thermosat that are next on the list. <br />My 350 crusaders are old with 1200 hrs and they do produce white smoke cause she burns a bit of oil. But the temp is ok. <br /><br />Have the risers been taken off and put back on recently? Sometimes folks don't put the gaskets back on correctly. just some thoughts?

most i/0's i have seen will discharge a little steam when running at planing speed, the exhaust gas is not in the manifold long enough to cool down to the point where steam in not created when the riser introduces the water into hot exhaust.......

The manifolds on the engine with steam are too hot to keep your hand on but the left engine is hot but you can keep your hand on it after running. This is fresh water and I was wondering if this system has flapper valves in the risers that can be stuck shut.

If the engine had stuck flapper valves it wouldn't have any power and wouldn't get any rpm either from all the back pressure. If both of the manifolds are hot on the engine that's steaming it sounds like there isn't very much raw water flow through that engine. It's not losing any coolant?

Ok llerrad<br /><br />We got hot manifolds. Now, cuple of things, crusader has the best design for manifolds and risers, such that, unless you take a sledge hammer to them or let them sit in sea water for years, rarely will you have water falling into the exhuast ports. They are far superior to Merc setups. That being said, How old Are the mainfolds? Are they original Crusader manufactured manifolds or are they the ever popular and far less quality Osco brand? 8 years is about the max they will last in fresh water. You can try pulling the riser off first. Rust builds up here quit a bit. Relpace the gasket with the hole in the gasket at the top position. Don't try to make holes in the gasket for the other 4 passages. Next, You say you replaced the impeller, but how old is the raw water pump itself? The seals on the shaft go bad, and a good way to tell is if water is leaking out of the pump behind the pulley. If water is dripping out steadily, replace the $250.00 Sherwood raw water pump. You mentioned that flow is low on this engine, so here's where I'd start.<br /><br />Good luck.

By the way, there is no flapper valve I am aware of on inboards. Is this an I/O setup?
