Hi,

the other day while running my mercury 650 blueband at full throttle it died on me. i wasnt looking behind to see the water coming from peehole as it usually does fine at warm up. there was only steam coming from the peehole and a smell of burning rubber. on letting it cool down it still wouldnt start. is it possible the impeller melted and rubber got sucked into engine?? hope i didnt blow anything!!

cheers for any help

Hi,

Sounds like you need an impeller. First i would do a compression test
to see if you melted a piston or two.
Oh and replace the 143 degree thermostat under the exhaust plate too.
Chances are it will be bad too. At least check it out in a pan of water on the stove.
Good Luck.

If you ran it till it stalled, odds are good you are chit out of luck.

A $22 impeller is going to look real cheap to you. That's why I put one in every spring.

Sorry to say, John is right. Please note that I did not use the words probably or possibly in that statement.

Because I hated my Mariner 100 sooooo much, I ran it without water until the alarm sounded just to see if it would hurt the impeller or engine. There was definitely damage to the impeller but it still pumped water later.

No damage whatsoever to the engine because I shut it off when the alarm sounded. I verified that later when I tore it down and rebuilt it.

Your's on the other hand, shut itself down because it was seizing. It may turn over and may even run, (probably rough idle) after it cools but the damage is done.
