Call me a dreamer! I know it can be done. The problem with electro-mechanical switching and control using a smart phone or an IPad is seemingly the need for an Internet signal. That could be a problem.
Maybe Bluetooth, maybe set up a LAN on the boat. There is a company called SP controls that I've dealt with. They have a software app called Doceri that enables an instructor to control classroom equipment such as a projector, screens, lights, etc. wirelessly (over the internet) with an IPad interface. Weve all seen the ads where the guy turns on the lights at home from his office over his smartphone (0r IPad) To me a signal is a signal. Steering, throttle, and gear shift can be controlled now by wired switching , why not wirelessly. Powertran and Panther make keychain type remotes to control low power outboards for trolling. I searched the App Store.....zilch. Maybe GOOGLE will have to develop it!

I'm going to the boat show in Sacramento next week and I'll see if anything is in the works. Any App developers out there?

Given how much trouble my iPad sometimes has just pairing with an external speaker over Bluetooth, much less a LAN connection, what you propose sounds pretty dangerous. I think I'd pass...

Not an app guy.. but an automation engineer.

Not all that complicated but the hardware, feedback sensors, etc. will set you back a pretty penny and in the end what value does it bring to boating?

An autopilot is much more practical and readily available
