I recently bought a 15' runabout with an 80hp mariner outboard. I have a lot of steering in one direction and hardly none in the other. I can't find any help on adjustments anywhere. Hope someone can help me.

Thanks
John

Re: steering adjustment

jman,

Do you mean the boat "pulls" in one direction?

Or, will the engine actually swivel farther in one direction, than the other?

Re: steering adjustment

Look at the link that connects the cable end to the motor. Perhaps if you had one a bit shorter or longer you would solve the problem.

Disconnect the "link" that I mention above. Turn the steering wheel all the way from lock to lock and count the turns. Now back the wheel off exactly half the number of turns. Set the motor straight and measure the distance you need the link to be. Check with the boat shop and see what is available.

the engine actually swivels more in one direction. Someone told me I have to take the wheel and helm off and wind the cable different. This is my first boat with a steering wheel setup and I don't know much about them.

Re: steering adjustment

Is this a "push pull" single cable system or a "string" type cable wrapped on a drum under the dash?

Re: steering adjustment

Then it cannot be "wound" differently. The motor should go in either direction the same when disconnected from the cable. If it moves further in one direction (unhooked) then post that as a problem in the Merc section. The Merc gurus may know why it wont.

Good luck!
