Steering and grease points grease

OK, I've read the volumes of replies regarding the greasing of a steering cable and tube. It always amazes me the response that people give on this board to people in need. You should be proud. I now have a clear picture of the process.<br /><br />Anyway, I was wondering what the preferred brand of grease should be. I would also like to use the same grease on all the grease points on the motor as well. I think I should be able to do that and obviously I'm looking for a waterproof, marine grease. I have a 200 Yamaha Saltwater series and run in both salt and fresh. If it costs a little more, I'll pay for it, I know Yamaha has a marine grease but haven't been able to find it and was wondering if there is a better aftermarket brand. If I have to buy two different kinds for each job I'll do that too.<br /><br />Thanks!

Use a "white" lithium based grease.

Wal-mart has A marine grease. For cables and things with no fiting use spray white lithium like DJ said. Tim

I use OMC Triple Guard Grease on all the stuff that uses grease. It is as water resistant as grease can get and is meant for marine use. <br /><br />I have lithium too, but it is not as water resistant so I don't use it on the boat or trailer anymore.<br /><br />While your lubing it up, take a minute to check all the fasteners - Nuts and Bolts both at the motor end and the helm. Any nuts are to be locking or have cotter pins. You don't want it to fall apart at WOT.

I agree I love that OMC blue grease sticks to my Yamaha and doen't bleed black when it gets wet. HOWEVER, I have been told NOT to use on the trailer bearings. (Temp on the wheel bearing to hot for the OMC stuff).

Another trick I use is to wipe the excess grease off the nipples and put it on the exposed threads of every bolt I see. Just a smear. Keeps the galvanobug at bay a little longer, especially on the trailer, and gives you peace of mind when you need to undo any nuts.

I think I read something about that too. I use regular wheel bearing grease in the trailer bearings. So far the Bearing Buddies are doing their job with off-the-shelf bearing grease.<br /><br />I use the omc grease on the rollers, hitch mechanism, etc.

Thanks for the response, I'm having trouble finding the triple guard, a place I can shoot to at lunch has Bel Ray Waterproof grease, Has anyone ever used that? He said it's the nuts, but of course he will if he's selling it. I'm still looking for the triple guard because I heard from several locals that it's good stuff also.

Triple Guard is a brand by OMC. You find it at Johnson/Evinrude dealers.
