Hey guys&gals I working on a old wooden boat that has a bell crank steering I need to link it to a 1957 35HP. Johnson the motor has a 1/4" hole with notches in the center I guess this is a standard hook-up but I know very little about where to go for some guidance except your vast knowlege base it looks like a 24" length rod would work does anybody know where I could buy one I guess I could fabricate it out of steel rod but doesn't it need to be bent and also able to pivot. Does anybody just make the stock end attachment? the bell crank end goes into a 3/8" hole in bell crank any help on this would pretty much make me complete as far as seeing if this boat flies.

hello<br /> that motor was originally designed for a cable and pullytype steering. I think all the attachments are still avalible from omc/bombadier

Capt. Rodbolt is correct. The quick disconnect fitting is a single piece of SS that was bent to form a "U" and then the sides were cut away to fit around the steering handle of the motor, from the bottom. A knurled knob on a spring with a pin through the end of it was mounted in the center of the ss bracket. To hook up the steering, one would push the bracket up to straddle the steering handle and push the knurled knob into the hole in the handle, and turn it 90 degrees to lock. These were pretty standard on Johnson/Evinrude until the mod-sixties or later!
