Steering Cable 50 hps Johnson

Is there a trick to getting the cable from out of the Transom/engine mounting assembly. I have disconnected the linkage from the motor and also the console. I also disconnected a large fitting from a treaded shaft going thru the engine mounting bracket. Why will it not come out of the mounting brackets.
