Steering cable at motor issue

I picked up a 70 ish Larson with a 1974 135 Evinrude. Disconnected the controls today and was also looking at the steering connection. I'm moving the motor to a 1984 Hurricane sd 176.

Pic one - shows the Larson steering connection at the motor. There is a clamp/bracket which holds the sleeve or casing and allows the cable to push/pull the motor to turn. Standard newer style, I have only used the pulley/cable steering prior to this.

Pic two - shows the cable at the back of the Hurricane. There is no bracket or clamp to hold the sleeve or casing. There are no holes where a bracket would have mounted. There is a nut or collar that would screw on to _____???? The Hurricane had a Yamaha 140hp that the old owner put on his bass boat

Can anyone clue me into what I'm missing or what I need to make the Hurricane steering work on this motor. The steering cable for the Larson is about 5 feet too long for the Hurricane.

The second type of cable you posted is for the later type of outboard where the cable goes through the tilt tube and a drag link attaches to the end (should have flat spot with hole, if not it's broken) and then to the front of the motor.
I doubt it would work on your motor.

It appears that you have the hollow tilt tube on your motor. See if the steering cable will go thru it and screw up to it. If so. lube it well, and purchase a link to the motor steering arm, as it looks like your current one won't fit.

If it doesn't fit the tilt tube, remove the steering cable block that mounts in the spashwell and move it to the new boat.

Hey Guys
Thanks for all the input. If all goes well, I remove the fittings and tube from my donor, place the tube over the hurricane cable,, hope the tube and connector screw together, buy the link bar, and it seems to me that I will still need the bracket to fix or mount the tube in the proper place, also allows for adjustment.

Is there a specific type lube?

Are all OMC link bars the same length?

Why are you transferring the bracket and tube from the old boat to the new one? Since you already have a tilt tube on the engine, the bracket and tube that are on the old steering cable are superfluous....unnecessary.

Do like was suggested above.....attach it like it's supposed to be. Steering cable attached directly to the motor's tilt tube.

What you have on the old boat is a contraption/adapter system so you could convert a cable/pulley steered motor over to the "newer" steering cable system. And it was probably put in place with a motor that was in place prior to the 135 that's there right now and used a cable/pulley system.

That 135 was designed with the newer cable system, so no need to reuse the old bracket and tube from the old boat.

Cannondale - Thanks for slapping me in the face:redface: Prior to this I have only had Pulley systems. This is an upgrade from the 60's to the 70's and 80's

I now see the tube that everybody was talking about - above the mounting bolts - part of the mount. This should make life much easier.

ezmobee -
Good lord man I even gave you a picture!

I was pretty tired when I replied @ 10:30ish. Yesterday was a long day, up at 6:00 - 3/4 of the day at work, Drive mom to the doctors go over her bills, Vote, get home, grind off old broken coupler and prep & prime, Look at Hurricane boat, Sand drywall mud on last of daughters bedroom, finish priming drywall, clean up mess, help son with math homework, have dinner, lay subfloor in daughters bedroom, Install new closet light box/hanger, Have an adult beverage:) and look at Iboats:D.

Saw your picture but originally thought it was an add on piece.

Are all OMC link bars the same length?
