Hello Everyone,

I (Bother-in-law) exchanged a '73 85hp Evinrude to a '79 125hp Johnson engine on my boat. However cable connects to the engine is different. My bother-in-law said there's a part I can get, like an adaptor, that will connect the cable to the engine. Does anybody know the name of this adaptor? Where could I get one? Is there such a part, or do I have to buy a new cable that's goes with this engine? He put the engine on my boat in April, and I've been waiting on him ever since then to get me this part.

Magicman....what you are probably waiting for is a steering link. Your "new" engine, which I don't think is a '79 but likely an '89, is equipped with a tilt tube. your '73 did'nt have one. The cable on the '73 was probably held on to the transom by a "pivoting" arm and the ram part of the steering cable connected directly to the engine.

With the 125, the steering cable would go through the pivot tube or steering tube. It's that pipe that hold the engine to the transom brackets and is hollow. The end of the steering cable or ram would go through this tube and be held in place by that large nut on the steering cable. The steering link connects the end of the ram to the engine.

One thing, usually the cables used for the older steering like on your old '73 aren't quite long enough for the steering tube. You may have to get a longer cable. Best thing to do is see your local Johnny/Rude dealer for some guidence. He can help you get what you need.

You need to identify just what year engine you have. OMC never made a 125 hp engine in 1979. The last year for the 125 crossflow was 1972, then came back in 1989 as a big bore looper. That year difference may make a difference in the type of cable connection you are looking for. Bombardier sells various adapter cables that can be used to adapt older cables to new and vice versa. Verify the year of the engine, then see you local Bombardier dealer and ask him to look in his 2013 Parts and Accessories book. These adaptors are in the Rigging section. OMC main engine control box harnesses all use the same red plug connector from 1973 through 1995.

Did your old motor use a support tube like this?

If so you shouldn't need anything to connect the cable to the new motor, unless you gave some parts away.

If you are looking to use the tilt tube on the new motor you will need to get a longer cable and a steering link arm specific to your motor. It would end up looking something like this.
