Steering Cable removal

I have read thru the many post here on steering cables but I have a problem which is unique. I have a Mariner 40HP with tilt/trim. The steering is a rotary type with teleflex cable. When I try to loosen the coupling nut that secures the cable to the tilt tube on the motor, the whole tilt tube rotates inside the housing. The tilt tube itself is fastened at both ends with locking nuts. I have tightend these nuts as much as I dare but the tube still rotates. Am I correct that once this nut is removed that the entire assy will pull out thru the tilt tube? Any suggestions ?

Re: Steering Cable removal

Rod, First get a new nut the size of the tilt tube. Then tighten it to the port side tilt tube nut. Use it as a "Jam" nut, and it may hold the tube enough. If that doesn't work, you can put a pipe wrench on the port side of the tilt tube to keep it from turning. If that doesn't work, you will have to lift the motor slightly, and remove the tilt tube and either replace it or put it in a vise to get the cable nut off.
