I have a 1982 Wellcraft w/a Merc 260 I/O.I'm trying to replace the old steering cable.I undid the nut from the cable to the steering tube and took the pin out from the end but the cable seems to be stuck in the steering cable tube. Can I try to hammer it out or am I doing something wrong?

Soak it with a good penetrating lube, turn the wheel to make it as short as possible, make sure the cable isn't binding on the turn going forward, and wack it until it comes out. They get stuck in the tube from corrosion and lack of lube.

Chris, You may have to heat it with a propane torch to remove it, if the oil doesn't work.

I had to heat mine, and it came right out. (Well, with some persuasion!)

Thanks guys, I just posted the exact same question not seeing this one. I'll let you know the results. I don't have a propane torch, but have a good heat gun.

Easy removal after soaking with liquid wrench. Sprayed it on, waited 3 min, sprayed again waited 3 more, two swift whacks with a hammer and voila! No heat required in my situation.
