I know how to route the cable for my boat, but what is an easy way to figure the length of the cable needed?

I was planning on buying regular like insulated chlothes line cable. Is there anything against it or should i buy a certain type of cable?

Re: steering cable

$10.00 for 50 feet. that is what it takes for a 14-16 foot boat.

Make sure to inspect ALL of the fittings, nuts and bolts and pulleys while you're at it, and replace anything that looks iffy. The cable and pulley systems are OK when maintained, but can be downright dangerous if not maintained. If one little thing breaks or pulls loose while underway, the motor is going to slam to one side and you may be swimming, until the boat comes back around and runs you over a few times. Of course this is true with any steering system......

Re: steering cable

the pulleys are great, i had them all out today. the steering wheel seems a little loose so i've gotta check that out, the springs look good just some surface rust on them. I've gotta go check out the cable clamps, if they are alright then i'll be fine i think.

Re: steering cable

actually a properly installed cable pulley system is more sensitive in response than any teleflex system. you have to keep the spring tension correct or the cable will jump the hub drum.
