Re: steering connections on 1985 25hp evinrude

Your previous post stated it was a 1986, which is correct. E25ELCDR translates to a 1986 electric start, long shaft. According to my sources that model has a tilt tube. Look for a hollow tube or pipe that goes through the clamp or stern brackets and acts as a pivot point for the motor to tilt around.

The steering cable goes clear through that tube and attaches to it via the nut on the cable. Now, from there a drag link (Evinrude part number 173699 for the kit) attaches to the end of the cable and goes back to the center hole on the carry/steering handle to complete the hookup. It is a very common arrangement used on the majority of outboards these days. Be sure to lubricate the cable where it goes thru the tube with some good waterproof marine grease.

If for some reason I am wrong and you don't have the hollow tube, then the transom mount has to be used.
