Steering control cable

Just got finished putting a new deck in a 14.5ft fiberglass boat. I am used to the old cable and pulley steering. This boat has a good cable but it is the kind that runs through a tube to the front of the engine. I hooked it up to my johnson and took off. You all know what happened next. The steering is backwards. Turn left to go right. To change this do I just take the cable out of the control box at the steering wheel and thread it back in the other way? Right now it goes in the top if the box and comes out the bottom. It looks to be a kind of worm gear setup. Thanks for any help before I take the whole thing out. Right now it could have bad results if the fishing is slow and I consume one or two too many of the finest hops and barley.

Re: Steering control cable

fireman, there are two holes on the steering box.Use the top one to feed the steering cable in it.There should be a plastic tube on the box too. That should be on the bottom. What that does is protect the end of the steering cable from dirt and other things.
So,yes, reinstall it in the other hole!

Re: Steering control cable

Just out of curiosity, which side of the boat is the helm on? Port or starboard?

Re: Steering control cable

As we say here in Southern Indiana, it'son the right side (humor). I assume that I just need to unhook cable from the engine and turn the steering wheel until the cable comes out of the box then start it back in the other hole and turn the wheel until I get the adjustment I want and hook back up to the engine.
If that is how then I thank you for the replies. I can tear my engine down and rebuild it, just put an new floor and wiring in it (which I had never done before) and just didn't have the knees to crawl under the console and look closely.
